Tacoma Youth Chorus

"We live with a small profit margin and staying on budget is critical for our survival. The reports from QuickBooks about our budget help us stay on track and give accurate information to our treasurer and board of directors."

Donated IT Strengthens Donor Relations and Helps Nonprofit Train Young Singers

Since 1991, the Tacoma Youth Chorus, based in University Place, Washington, has nurtured young vocalists in grades 1 through 12 by facilitating instruction from some of the most talented choristers in the world. Most recently, all seven of the organization's choirs studied with guest instructor Dr. David Flood, master of the choristers and organist at England's Canterbury Cathedral.

In addition to recruiting talented guest instructors for its more than 230 vocalists, the Tacoma Youth Chorus performs at regional, national, and international venues. Its choirs have performed at historic cathedrals around the world including Canterbury, St. Paul's, Notre Dame, La Madeleine Chartres, and St. Stephen's.

With help from a strong list of donors, the organization offers need-based scholarships to families who can't afford the school's tuition. "We do not turn away anyone who is qualified to sing with us because of an inability to pay," says Nancy Brakke, Tacoma Youth Chorus' administrative assistant and de-facto IT guru.

In order to offer financial aid as well as access to world-class musicians, the Tacoma Youth Chorus relies heavily on its donors, and especially the donated software tools from TechSoup.org to stay on top of donor relations. The organization requested a three-user version of Intuit's QuickBooks Premier 2013 donation for its accounting.

Having three user licenses allows multiple people at the organization to quickly access data, create monthly tuition statements, and generate reports for the treasurer and board of directors. To make even better use of its accounting data, the organization syncs QuickBooks with GiftWorks' fundraising and donor management software, which is also available as a donation through TechSoup. These donations have been invaluable to help the organization understand the relationship of its donors to the programs.
